Question:

The Fluke 113 trips an RCD when measuring Voltage Phase to Earth, why is this?

Answer:

The Fluke 113 has a VCHEK LoZ function, a very useful function to automatically detect when live voltage is present, and not the so called "ghost voltages".
This means that it has an input impedance of 3 kOhm and it will draw approx. 80 mA when connected to 240V.

However, if you use the Fluke 113 across Phase to Earth a typical RCD on the circuit will identify a current difference of greater than 30mA between Phase and Neutral, causing it to trip.

Unfortunately, the VCHECK LoZ is permanently activated in the Fluke 113, where all other meters in the 11x series have the option of selecting the VCHEK LoZ mode.
