10 / 100 Mb/s does not require all 4 wire pairs
This may happen if pin 4, 5, 7 or 8 is at fault because they are not needed for transmission speeds of 10 or 100Mbps. Only pin 1, 2, 3 and 6 is needed.
In this second example pin 3 is broken and no data transmission will be possible at all.
