The purpose of this article is to define the difference between a meter being Calibrated or Certified.

The difference between calibration and certification causes a lot of confusion. Certification simply involves verifying the performance accuracy of a machine at a given point in time. After verification, if you find that the machine is not performing within factory specifications, calibration is necessary.

Fluke meters come calibrated from the factory but the calibration is not Certified to a traceable standard. It will meet the accuracy specifications in the manual. In some cases you may need the meter certified to a traceable standard and will need to be sent into the Fluke Service Center.
