A lot of the meters you can check the fuses without opening the unit. You will have to get what the fuses should read from the users manual of the meter you have. Connect one lead into the ohms input and then take that same test lead and measure the upper part of milli-amp and amp inputs and you should get a resistance reading.  If you get "OL" the fuse would be bad, and should be replaced.
