See the below linked files for information on the vacuum pump used with 6270A, 7250, 7252, 3990, PPC3 and PPC4 pressure controllers to control pressures below and atmosphere (e.g. negative gauge mode). This vacuum pump is connected to the EXHAUST port of these controllers. A different vacuum pump is used when you need to connect a vacuum pump to the REFERENCE port of 7250 or 7252 controllers.

The VA-PPC/MPC OEM part number is DV-85N but if the pump is not purchased from Fluke Calibration the pump does not include the automatic solenoid valve.

The automatic solenoid valve vents the vacuum pump inlet to atmosphere when the vacuum pump is off and provides two benefits:

1. It's safe to use the pressure controller with the vacuum pump off. Without this valve, using the controller with the vacuum pump off would put positive pressure (from the controller's EXHAUST) to the vacuum pump and potentially damage the controller and the vacuum pump.

2. No vacuum remains in the controller's EXHAUST port that might pull oil from the vacuum pump into the EXHAUST port of the controller. This would contaminate the pressure controller and lead to a costly repair.


Some users like to add an exhaust filter to catch any oil vapor coming from the exhaust at the end of the handle. The exhaust threads on the end of handle are 1/2 inch NPT-M as of 2009, or 3/8 inch NPT-M prior to 2009. A NPT elbow would be used with most exhaust filters to connect them to the exhaust. NPT elbows are typically available at your local hardware store and could be any material that is compatible with vacuum pump oil. See the attached files for a couple of options for exhaust filters. Note that Fluke Calibration does not sell exhaust filters for these vacuum pumps.

Vacuum pump with exhaust filter with NPT threads.
 

This vacuum pump is primarily used in HVAC/Refrigeration applications where it is used to evacuate systems that are filled with refrigerant. This refrigerant is typically not compatible with vacuum pump oil so it's recommended to drain the vacuum pump oil from the vacuum pump after every use. In calibration applications with clean dry gas (like nitrogen or air) the oil will last a long time. It's recommended to replace the oil when it is visibly darker and not transparent. View the oil level in the sight glass on the side of the case. 

The OEM oil is "Black Gold" vacuum pump oil. It can be purchased on amazon.com. Its viscosity can vary from 21 to 500 cSt at 40 degrees Celsius. Its density varies from 0.86 - 0.90 kg/m3 @ 60ºF (15.6ºC). An equivalent oil is Phillips 66 Multipurpose R&O Oil 22 (or any of the same oils ending with 32, 46, 68, 100, 150, 220, 320 or 460). See attached Phillips 66 SDS sheet. Any good quality vacuum pump oil with viscosity in this range can be used with this vacuum pump. 

Many users ask about the gas ballast valve.

The below start-up and shut-down information is from the vacuum pump manufacturer's instruction sheet. However, if you limit use to clean dry gas these steps are not necessary. 

START-UP - Open one intake port and isolation valve, close gas ballast valve and start pump. Make vacuum connections. Crack gas ballast valve for the first part of the evacuation procedure. After pump quiets down from initial volume of air, close valve and continue evacuating. Failure to close valve will result in poor pump performance.

SHUT-DOWN - Close isolation valve and crack gas ballast valve. Continue running pump for 2-3 seconds. With gas ballast valve still cracked, stop pump and then close valve. Remove hose connections and cap intakes.
