Question:

Can we test 3 Phase equipment with the Fluke appliance testers and what do we need ?

Answer:

Testing 3-phase devices is limited possible under the following conditions:

  • Only Bond, Insulation and substitute leakage current tests are possible
  • active tests such as load/leak test cannot be done with the 6x00 or 6x00-II directly.

In addition, the machine must be switched on by means of a mechanical switch.
If this is done with a switch-on relay or other form of electronic switch-on, no tests can be performed (except the Bond test).

The reason is that the appliance tester is not capable of supplying 3 phase power and then the device will not be switched on.
So the tests  that can be done are only carried out up to the switch-on circuit, you will not have a full functional test.

There are various accessories to test the 3-phase devices for leakage current, see below.
During the leakage current test, the device must "run" in operating condition and can therefore not be used with the PAT tester, which is not able to supply the device correctly.
For this test you can purchase a Fluke-368 leakage current clamp, for more info see;

https://www.fluke.com/en-gb/product/electrical-testing/clamp-meters/fluke-368-fc

Values measured with this clamp can be noted afterwards in the DMS or Trutest software

If you connect the relevant 3-phase appliance with an extension cord as shown in the photo below, you can clamp the leakage current clamp around the loose earth wire (green/yellow wire in the photo).

This is an extension cord with the wires separate, they are not in a casing, you can easily put a current clamp around one of the wires.

Version for 32A type number 1236D, order no. 2145939

The other tests (Bond, Insulation and substitute leakage current) that you can do via the Fluke-6500-II, you only need an adapter plug to 16A and/or 32A and for this the brand Unitest (from Fluke), has various accessories in the range;

Two different types available:
For 16A, type number 1240D, order no. 3313412
For 32A, type number 1241D, order no. 3313420

If necessary, there are also adapters from 3-phase connector to banana plug connection
